Hua Hin online community - low season blues

Recent political protests in Bangkok combined with the global financial crisis have made this one of the quietest low seasons Hua Hin has ever seen. Hopes are at rock bottom as to whether things will improve for the high season which starts in November. There seems to be no light at the end of Thailand’s political tunnel of turmoil and fewer pennies in people’s pockets means that more will be staying away this holiday season.

The only thing that has been as busy as ever is the forum as visitors and expats login to find out how Hua Hin is faring in these times of trouble. Naturally many of the hot topics of discussion have been politics and global affairs, both pro and anti government readers have been posting their comments but as farangs they will always be just observers to the often farcical events that make up Thailand’s political roundabout.

A couple of reader polls regarding relationship age differences and provinces of Thai partners caused lengthy discussion though the results were somewhat predictable. There were also questions to those that live here about moving on and what country would you choose if it ever became too problematic to remain in Thailand. Vietnam and the Philippines topped the list as they have similar climates, cheaper costs of living and more attractive long term visa plans. Unless Thailand does something positive about its immigration policies for long-stayers it is likely to loose a lot of long term residents over time to more welcoming neighbouring countries, again another blow to the economy.

With all things quiet on the bar front there is very little to report this month. For those in the Takiab area check out the Sunset Boulevard, a newly opened bar offering, as the name suggests, cold beer and sunset views. The accommodation section has also been very quiet this month with fewer bookings than usual for this time of year, we hope this will slowly pickup towards high season though. The feeding section has been busy with culinary critics getting out and about to try out the ever increasing number of new restaurants in Hua Hin.

A few questions regarding yellow and blue house books for foreigners were cleared up in the property section. It appears that immigration is now asking for these for proof of residence on visa extensions, so that is another document to add to the ever growing list of requirements to stay here.

A new Hua Hin Golf Gossip section has been started by a couple of local pros to offer tips and updates on course conditions and answer questions on golf in general. Those wanting to learn the game should get up to Mongkol Driving Range and have a chat with John Wither who offers lessons and golf packages for beginners, juniors and groups.

The Bangsaphan Guide has been updated with new bar, restaurant and accommodation listings. More people are now taking an interest in this beach town two hours south of Hua Hin as it offers a far cheaper cost of living and is ideal for those who want to get out of the hustle and bustle that Hua Hin has become lately.

As ever the popular ‘ask the expats’ section was inundated with bizarre requests including portable potties, kitten adoption, poodle parlours, amp meters, tool hire and even house gecko removal. Find our more on the Hua Hin Forum.
